Preheat the oven to 165 degrees Celsius. Grease a baking tray approximately 20x20 cm.

In a saucepan, combine the sugar, butter and water. Cook over a medium heat until the contents come to the boil. Remove from the heat and stir in the chocolate pieces until melted and smooth. Stir in the eggs and vanilla extract. Stir the soda and salt into the flour and fold the mixture into the chocolate mixture.

Pour the mixture evenly into the baking tray and place in the oven to bake for 25 to 30 minutes. Be careful not to over-bake the brownies!

Cool the cakes in the baking tray and then cut them into cubes of any convenient size. Decorate and serve as desired (cream and strawberries are recommended), or you can combine the brownies with pudding, for example.
